Will you upgrade?
Over the years I have gotten to the point where I am indifferent when it comes to choosing an operating system for my computer. I personally like the feel of OS X for the Mac and in some cases find it is somewhat easier to use. To be honest, I would totally convert at home, but there is a major hurdle in my way. I don’t want to have to buy all my software over again, I know it would cost at least $10,000 to replace all the software I have, and unfortunately there are some programs that aren’t even made for the Mac. So I find myself trapped for eternity using PC based products.
There is hope in sight…the fact that you can now install Windows on a new Mac with an Intel chip is promising, but as of January 30th Microsoft is taking Windows to the next level. Windows Vista hits store shelves and I will have to say that I am impressed with their marketing this time around. It seems that Microsoft has hired some multimedia developers to improve their online Vista marketing.

Windows Vista is definitely prettier this time around. I can see they have incorporated some of the classic Macintosh OS X glassy elements like buttons and window frames. The Windows Flip 3D feature looks really nice and efficient; I always liked the similar feature on the Mac even though it doesn’t have the same 3D effect. The catch is it is only available in the Premium Home, Business, and Ultimate editions.

The Instant Search concept is nice too…no more sitting and staring blankly at a search waiting icon while listening to your hard drive clicking endlessly trying to find one simple file that you just worked on yesterday. Folder and file previews have been greatly improved with Live Icons…finally! Windows XP couldn’t hold a candle to the Mac when it came to file/folder preview features.
Finally there are integrated protection systems, Vista has included Windows Defender for protection from spy ware, Windows Backup for simple file and system backups, Personal Firewall to protect your Internet connection, and the Microsoft Phishing filter added to Internet Explorer to protect your passwords and identity.
So how much will this cost to upgrade?
Windows Vista Home Basic $199 – Upgrade $100
Windows Vista Home Premium $239 – Upgrade $159
Windows Vista Business $269 – Upgrade $179
Windows Vista Ultimate $349 – Upgrade $199
Kicking around the bookstore the other day, I saw that there is actually a new Window’s Vista magazine on the market. We don’t carry that one yet, but do have several other magazines related to PCs and Macintosh machines. Check out the Computers & Internet category to view our choices. We do have several others that are not listed in our online catalog, so be sure to send us an inquiry if you are looking for one in particular.
We have had a few requests for MacWorld, it isn’t on our website, but you can add it to your account if you request it via email or phone.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
