Escape from Relatraz

With the Christmas holidays right around the corner, we all have a pile of movies we want to catch up on. Going to the movies is a great way to escape the relatives and in-laws for a couple of hours. Grab your copy of Entertainment Weekly, they always include its list of must see movies. This week, I Am Legend  has the top popular vote. As for the critic’s vote, it looks like there is a four way tie between Atonement, Juno, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and The Savages all with A- ratings.

Holiday Treat – Ginger Snaps to die for!

I love the holidays. Actually I really like the food during the holidays. With the help of my colleagues here at work, I’ve already gone through three tins of Chex Mix. I have bought the smoked turkey, plus reserved our Honey Baked Ham. My wife makes a pretty good dressing so I’m looking forward to that. But her best holiday treat she makes just for me is Ginger Snaps! Except these don’t "snap" they are soft, chewy and oh so good. It’s a family recipe so I am going to share it with you here.

Warning: these are very addictive!

Soft Ginger Snaps

 ¾ C butter
1 egg
4 tbsp. molasses
1 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp baking soda
2 C flour, sifted
Sugar to roll dough in before baking

  1. Mix butter and sugar until a creamy paste forms, add egg, beat until fluffy, add molasses & dry ingredients
  2. Form into large marble size balls and then roll in sugar
  3. Chill dough before making – makes it easier to work – about 2 hours
  4. Bake 350 degrees - 1" apart ungreased cookie sheet approximately 6-8 minutes for soft/chewy
OR for 10-12 minutes for crispy cookies that "snap"

You can find other great recipes like this one in many of the Food and Cooking magazines we offer. Check out the Cooking, Food, and Wine Category for the full list.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

Discovery Girls Isn’t Just For Girls

DiscoveryGirls12-07In my spare time I peruse Yahoo! Answers for questions about magazines and noticed that many parents ask about appropriate magazines for teen and pre-teen girls. One magazine that I usually recommend for pre-teen girls is Discovery Girls. The content is very appropriate since it is co-written by girls 8 to 12.

After looking at the most recent October-November issue, I noticed in the magazine feedback section that a librarian made an interesting observation. She said that boys tend to read Discovery Girls just as much as the girls do. This makes sense since these days boys at that age are trying to learn more on how to associate with girls. The librarian said that the boys tend to read the sections Embarrassing Moments and Ask Ali. It’s interesting to see young boys using this title as an intro guide for relating to girls.

So if you see your son checking out a copy, try not to give him a hard time. He’s just trying to learn how to talk to the opposite sex. As for the girls, this magazine is becoming very popular.  It’s has a perspective from young ladies that doesn’t come across as an older person trying to write like a child.

Pick up a subscription to Discovery Girls for $19.95 – 26% off the cover price.
