Why does everyone hate 13?
Ah so today is Friday the 13th! What’s the big deal and how in the world did it become a day associated with unlucky happenstance?
Did you know the ancient Egyptians liked the number 13? Their belief system centered around a lifetime of 12 cycles, the 13th cycle was considered the afterlife. And since they felt that death was a happy transition the number 13 was considered lucky. I guess they were the only ones who felt this way though.
According to the Hindu belief system it was unlucky for group of 13 people to hang out with each other. The Vikings weren’t fond of 13 either; their folk lore tells a story of banquet amongst their 12 major deities…Loki the “evil” god of mischief wasn’t invited. Being the master of mischief, he invited himself anyway and ended up provoking the blind god of winter to dispatch Balder the god of goodness.
Early Christianity also added to thirteen’s bad reputation with the Last Supper story where Jesus was with the 12 disciples. As in the outcome of the Viking folklore, Judas ended up being the party pooper and betrayed Jesus. This in turn prompted the Crucifixion on the following Friday. Sorry, I wasn’t able to find out if it was Friday the 13th or not.
