Martha Offers Something Refreshing
If you didn’t remember last Thursday was the first day of summer. It’s blazingly hot in the Southwest, while many other folks around the country are experiencing torrential rains. We would appreciate if you sent of that rain down here in the Deep South as we are in the midst of a very long drought.
Here’s one way to beat the heat, especially if you are throwing a party over the 4th of July.
About a year ago, Martha Stewart Living
had an awesome summertime drink idea. I used it twice so far for parties and it was a hit both times. If you want to do something a little different (and easier) than homemade lemonade this year, try some cool and crisp "vanilla-sunkist water." It tastes just like one of those orange creamcicles that you get from the Ice Cream Man, but not sweet. I guess you could add sugar if you wanted to…maybe I’ll try that this year.
To make it, get a pitcher (preferably glass, like a Kool-Aid pitcher, for presentation). Slice up one navel orange in round quarter inch slices. Then cut down the center of one fresh vanilla bean to release the flavor of the aromatic inner paste. Toss both items in the pitcher of water and let sit in the refrigerator overnight. The blend of orange and vanilla essence is super refreshing.
For those of you who enjoy a summer time drink with a zip and zing. Check out the July issue of Martha Stewart Living. This issue includes another drink using oranges, but this one is enhanced with a brown sugar syrup, lime juice, mint and rum. You can find this recipe in the back on pages 187 through 188.
Here's a tip, I tried it this past weekend and you may want to add a little regular sugar to cut the tartness of the lime juice. It's excellent on the rocks.
I hope you have a fun and safe 4th of July!
