Why is it called "Black Friday?"
The Thanksgiving holiday is over and I am literally stuffed. I have gotten my turkey/ham fix until the next upcoming holiday. As for getting out and doing some shopping this past weekend, I did not; but I did see the news. What is it about going shopping the Friday morning after Thanksgiving, some folks go crazy!
They call it "Black Friday;" seems fitting, since this year it looks like if you cut in line at 5am you would end up with a black eye. All jokes aside, the term Black Friday was more than likely coined by an accountant. Black Friday has been the unofficial first day of the Christmas shopping season since the 1970's. So what does it really mean?
The metaphorical reference to the Friday as "black" is attributed to an accounting premise that most retailers take daily sales losses from January through the beginning of November. Since accountants and much of today's accounting software show losses in red, the Friday after Thanksgiving is the first time many retailers start making a profit and find their balance sheet numbers switching from red to black.
According to Wikipedia, this term was picked up by the media for the first time on November 26, 1982 during a broadcast of ABC News's "World News Tonight," but may have been more of a reference to the heavy traffic and crowds. It was not until November 24th 1990, that the Charlotte Observer first referred to Black Friday from the accounting point of view when they stated "Black Friday is the nickname for the start of the Christmas shopping season. That usually means retailers can count on moving their financial footing into the black and out of the red.
"
As for me this year, I will mostly be shopping on the Internet. Of course, my family is probably sick of getting magazine subscriptions as gifts from me, so I will need to use plan B. Many people don't know this, but EBSCO Industries Inc.
(our parent company) actually owns several other consumer retail businesses for folks who love outdoor sports that cater to hunting and fishing. I was talking with one of their Internet marketing managers and he gave me a few specials to consider myself and pass along to you.
