Make Your Favorite Websites Serve You

Using RSS to keep up with your favorite websitesHow many news websites have you been to where they are regurgitating the same pointless story about a celebrity junkie who died six months ago?

Is there a way to preview headlines without wasting valuable time visiting all of your favorite sites each day?

Yes there is…And if you’re not using the RSS feature then you may be missing out on a very useful time saving tool.

RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication, but what does that mean? It means websites that have this option (like this one) offer the option to send you their new/current content without you having to visit the website on a daily basis.

It’s almost like having a newspaper/magazine send you updated information at all hours of the day. And it’s a great way to keep up-to-date on information from the companies you deal with without having to receive their emails.

Secret advantage!

One unspoken advantage is that an RSS feed provides you with more security than email. If more people used RSS connections they wouldn’t have to worry about phishing email as much. It’s like having a direct line with the company. People can’t send you RSS feeds, which means you are in control of the information that comes to you.

The reason this hasn’t been widely adopted yet is because many people have no clue what RSS is or how it works. And unfortunately, there are still some issues with RSS feed consistency. Hopefully this post will change all that for you.

No more programs please!

Early on, I tested many of the downloadable software solutions available called RSS Feed Readers. They all look almost exactly like your email program and this turned me off. It felt inefficient to have two similar looking programs open on my desktop. Eventually though, I found a solution I really liked.

I use the iGoogle home page as my default home page every time I open my web browser. iGoogle allows you to add RSS headline lists from your favorite sites so that you can quickly scan over them every time you open a new browser window. Google also offers a separate tool called Google Reader, but I found that the iGoogle Home Page feels much more visually organized for me.

Plus if you have a Gmail email account you can take your favorite website feeds wherever you go, even if you aren’t on your own computer. Nice huh?

So how do I set it up?

To get an idea of what this looks like, go to the Google homepage http://www.google.com – More than likely it will be in Classic Mode, you can switch to iGoogle Mode by using the link in the top right corner where it says iGoogle | Sign in.

Once you click iGoogle you’ll see the page change where there are now a bunch of boxes (called Gadgets). Scroll down and get familiar with the layout. You can move the boxes around by clicking on the blue area at the top of the box and drag to reposition them on the page. Scroll down and you’ll see the CNN list. That is exactly what their RSS feed looks like.

In the CNN Gadget you should see the most recent top three headlines. You can get a quick synopsis of the article by clicking on the plus sign next to the headline; or you can visit the site directly by clicking on the headlines that interest you. If you want to add more headlines, click the triangle in the top right corner of the Gadget. Choose Edit settings and change the Show Items dropdown box to your preferred number, then click Save.

Let’s add a new RSS feed to your page!

I will be adding video instructions shortly…

Home and Garden Magazine - DISCONTINUED

House and Garden has been discontinuedAccording to Folio Magazine, Condé Nast has decided to discontinue Home & Garden magazine (for a second time actually). I didn’t know this, but Home and Garden had been around since 1911 and was previously discontinued in 1993.

Then in 1995 House & Garden was brought back from the dead. Unfortunately, this may be the last time we see this publication ever again, but you never know. The last issue will be December 2007.

Please do not help these people

This is a scam by email spammers.

CAPTCHA Strip Game Scam

There is a new type of website pop-up/pop-under where you will see a scantily clad woman asking you to decode the letters of different configurations. Once you enter your answer it is recorded and the picture changes, removing more of her clothing.

How is this a scam?

Your answer is being captured and used to decode the CAPTCHA pictures for whatever website they are trying to attack. The sites that are being attacked could be forums, email account providers, and other online social communities they are trying to target. SPAM can affect more than just your email inbox these days.

In this particular example the Spammers are going after Yahoo email setups where the software automatically generates a mass of valid Yahoo email accounts. Spammers will then use these open email accounts to eventually send SPAM email. The ISP’s won’t catch it because it will see that it’s from address is a valid Yahoo email account.

But Melissa is so pretty; can I just enter the wrong info?

You could if you wanted to, but the game won’t let you go any further. When you start the game there is an automated program somewhere else on the Internet that is applying for a new email address, once you enter the code it takes your information and enters it into the email address application on another website. Their automated program will know it’s correct when the other application jumps to the new email account approval page.

That is how it knows if you got the right answer or not.

What bothers me most about this idea though is that children can be exposed to it. Potentially it could be put on a website that is not considered Adult oriented material (i.e. one that sells cell phone ring tones). In some cases Adult website blocking programs will miss it since it will either be on a pop-up or pop-under.

What should you do?

A company called Trend Micro makes a program that detects this Trojan horse program.

Then again you could close the image and just not play along.

Do NOT get left behind

Photography Business BlogDo you blog? If you don’t, you could be missing out on a great business (marketing) opportunity. This is especially true if you run a service business.

Blogging isn’t used as an online journal of life events anymore. If people ask me “Do I need a website?” The first thing I ask is, “What do you do for a living?

If they tell me that they run some sort of service business like a doctor, lawyer, contractor, carpet cleaner, or even a retired mom who makes beautiful bead necklaces, then I say…”Forget a run of the mill website, you need to start a blog.

Why?

  1. Blogs are easy to set up
  2. It’s FREE in most cases
  3. Adding your own writing and pictures is soooooo simple

Service businesses are made for blogs. You constantly have new projects and/or clients with problems you helped solve. Why not tell other people what you did to make your client’s life better?

Great Blog Example

The professional photographer that we used to take three-month-old photos of my son had the right idea. Emanuel takes two to ten of his favorite shots and posts them with comments. This not only shows off his best work, but also gets you… Read the rest of this entry »

Marketing your small business locally on the web

<br />
Sugarraes got the 411 on local websitesI was going through some of my blog feeds and found a link to an older post found on Blog written by professional Web Search Engine Optimization (SEO) consultant/guru. Her name is Rae Hoffman and she has been doing Web related projects for almost a decade now. Her blog posts are witty, extremely knowledgeable, and I can also appreciate the fact that they are from a woman’s perspective.

Here is a link to her advice on what to do when you are ready to put up a website for your local business. She has the normal website setup advice, but I found the list of Online Promotion of you new website links to be excellent.

Her advice is gold. Use it and prosper (online)!

NEW Ebscomags Website Upgrades

Wednesday (8/29/2007) we launched some new features to the website. One of the major changes was to our catalog’s paging list system. You will now find that the pages load much more quickly. This upgrade helped speed up the website’s Search capability too.

We also listened to your feedback on the 2006 Year End Survey and added a new feature on the Your Account page. You now have more options to edit your email newsletter preferences. Many of you stated that you would prefer to receive this newsletter monthly instead of bi-weekly. You now have the option to get this newsletter twice a month, once a month, or not at all.

Another upgrade that was added, is the option to receive your Renewal Notice via email. Currently if you sign up you will receive both the paper and the electronic version until we phase out the paper backup copy for those that elect to receive the electronic copy only.

Login here if you would like to change any of your email preferences.

UPDATED - 9/19/07
